Citizens for SWAT was created in 2005 to ensure that the San Diego SWAT team is equipped with the most up-to-date and effective equipment and to ensure the continued safety of the citizens of San Diego. We donate equipment such as vehicles, weapons, personal protection and new technology. Citizens for SWAT raises funds through sponsors who donate at a variety of levels to fund the purchase of this equipment. To date, we have raised more than $700,000 which has helped provide much needed equipment such as a rapid deployment vehicle, gear, robots, and weapons.
San Diego Police Department’s SWAT Team:
The San Diego SWAT Team was established in 1965 after recent civil unrest created a need for the department to form a specialized team comprised of highly trained officers with military training. Since its creation, the San Diego SWAT team has developed into several different components including, the Primary Response Team (PRT), Special Response Team (SRT), a sniper team, and a hostage negotiation team. These brave men and women put their lives on the line each day to protect the citizens of San Diego. They are the front line for confronting heavily armed criminals, hostage rescue, disaster events, mob and riot containment, and special trauma and rescue, just to name a few. To operate the team needs specialized equipment such as body armor, entry tools, armored vehicles, personal protective gear, surveillance equipment and advanced weapons. However, with a small budget, and a looming city financial crisis, the team often relies on outdated, rundown military gear. With these constraints, they are facing criminals who have advanced equipment and technology with gear that is unable to keep up. Beyond the obvious increase in effectiveness and safety, the equipment donated by Citizens for SWAT provides a sense of pride and increases morale for this unique and special force in our local police department.
